If you are ready to experience the unique thrill of riding a motorcycle for the first time, then there is no better place to learn than at the Riding Academy at Great South Harley-Davidson®. Our experienced and certified instructors will teach you all that you need to know to master the road for yourself on a genuine Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. The best thing about learning to ride at Great South Harley-Davidson® is that once you pass the three day New Rider Course, you are able to get your motorcycle license without the hassle of having to take the test at the DMV. In addition to the New Rider Course, we offer an Experienced Riders Course, which can help you to take you skills to the next level. Also, our course can help you save money on your motorcycle insurance. 

What to Expect from the New Rider Course

When you take a New Rider Course at the Riding Academy you’ll:

  • Learn to ride on a genuine Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, which will be provided to you.
  • Get in-class and on-range instruction from Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) and H-D® Certified Coaches.
  • Learn to safely accelerate, shift, brake, and turn, along with maneuvers like controlling skids and surmounting obstacles.
  • Earn an MSF Basic RiderCourseSM Completion Card, which may (varies by state) exempt you from the riding portion of your license exam and score you a discount on motorcycle insurance.

Q: What will I need to register?

A: You'll need a valid automobile driver's license or learner's permit, and have the ability to ride a bicycle.

Q: Do I need any special gear?

A: You'll need to bring the following:

  • A heavy, long-sleeve shirt or jacket
  • Jeans, chaps, or leather pants
  • Over-the-ankle, sturdy footwear
  • Full-fingered gloves
  • A helmet that meets DOT requirements
  • Eyewear

Q: What motorcycle will I ride?

A: Great South Harley-Davidson® will provide you with a genuine Harley-Davidson Street® 500 for you to complete your New Rider Course range time on.

What to Expect from the Experienced Rider Course

Designed solely for experienced riders, this eight-hour one or two day course is taught by dedicated Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) and H-D® Certified Coaches. 

When you take the Experienced Rider Course at the Riding Academy you’ll learn advanced tips and techniques that will help you own the road such as:

  • Control at low speeds
  • Risk management
  • Limited-space maneuvers
  • Cornering judgment
  • Swerving and stopping quickly on straights and in curves
  • Multiple curve maneuvers and surmounting objects
  • When you’re done, you’ll not only ride with more confidence than ever, you’ll earn an MSF Basic RiderCourseSM 2 Completion Card that may qualify you for a discount on motorcycle insurance.

Q: What will I need to register?

A: In order to register for the Experience Rider Course you will need the following:

  • A street-ready motorcycle
  • Motorcycle endorsement, permit or license
  • Proof of valid motorcycle insurance

Q: Do I need any special gear?

A: You'll need to bring the following:

  • A heavy, long-sleeve shirt or jacket
  • Jeans, chaps, or leather pants

Q: What bike will I ride?

A: For the riding portion, you will provide a street-ready motorcycle of your choosing. Remember, you must currently own a motorcycle or make other arrangement to participate in this portion of the class.
